Xbox commence à tenir une promesse particulièrement séduisante pour les joueurs attachés à leurs jeux physiques : transformer un disque compatible en licence numérique. Et la liste des jeux concernés dépasse déjà les 800 titres.

Annoncée à la Gamescom puis déployée auprès des membres Xbox Insider depuis le 31 août, la fonctionnalité Disc-to-Digital commence à livrer ses premiers résultats. Et ils sont plutôt impressionnants : une base de données communautaire recense désormais plus de 800 jeux compatibles, avec plusieurs centaines d’autres titres potentiellement appelés à rejoindre la liste. Et face à la décision de PlayStation d’arrêter les disques, force est d’admettre que Xbox pourrait frapper un gros coup…

Comment fonctionne le Disc-to-Digital sur Xbox ?

Le principe est finalement assez simple. Sur une Xbox One ou une Xbox Series X, il suffit d’insérer un disque compatible puis de lancer le jeu ou de sélectionner l’option permettant de réclamer la licence numérique. Une fois l’opération effectuée, le jeu est associé au compte Microsoft du joueur.

Le disque peut alors retourner tranquillement sur son étagère. Le jeu peut dès lors être téléchargé depuis la bibliothèque et lancé sans avoir besoin d’insérer à nouveau le Blu-ray. Une évolution particulièrement intéressante pour les possesseurs d’une Xbox Series X qui souhaitent profiter de leur collection physique tout en conservant la souplesse du dématérialisé.

Et le système va même plus loin. Lorsqu’un titre est compatible, les fonctionnalités numériques associées peuvent notamment ouvrir l’accès à Xbox Play Anywhere ou au Xbox Cloud Gaming. Surtout, la licence n’est pas définitivement « gravée » sur le compte, elle reste liée au disque. Si celui-ci est vendu ou prêté, le nouveau propriétaire peut récupérer les droits numériques en l’utilisant sur son propre compte. Malin !

Plus de 800 jeux déjà concernés… et une liste qui devrait grossir

C’est ici que le Disc-to-Digital devient particulièrement intéressant. La liste actuellement recensée dépasse les 800 jeux, et elle ne se limite pas aux grosses productions récentes.

On y retrouve notamment Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, plusieurs Call of Duty, Battlefield, Borderlands, BioShock, Castlevania, mais aussi des titres plus anciens ou désormais retirés de la vente. Le cas de Deadpool, pourtant indisponible à l’achat numériquement, est particulièrement révélateur du potentiel de cette fonctionnalité pour la préservation du jeu vidéo.

Cette liste n’est toutefois pas figée. Microsoft parle de « milliers » de jeux dès le lancement et confirme vouloir en ajouter progressivement. Tous les éditeurs ne participent pas encore au programme, ce qui explique certaines absences assez surprenantes.

Et surtout, cette logique permet d’imaginer un scénario plutôt confortable pour les joueurs : acheter aujourd’hui un jeu Xbox physique, puis pouvoir continuer à y jouer demain sur une machine dépourvue de lecteur. Une Xbox Series S, par exemple, ne peut évidemment pas lire le disque, mais une fois le droit numérique obtenu sur une console compatible, le jeu peut être installé et joué numériquement sur l’écosystème Xbox lorsque le titre le permet.

La liste ne fait donc que commencer. Et pour une fois, le passage du physique au numérique ressemble davantage à un cadeau fait aux joueurs qu’à une nouvelle contrainte, et cela semble plutôt de très bon augure avant le lancement de la future gamme « Project Helix » à venir.
